Dog Vomiting Yellow Stuff

When you see your dog vomiting yellow stuff, it’s natural to be concerned. Unless your dog exhibits other signs of illness, a dog who heaves occasionally shouldn’t cause you distress. If you do notice other signs of illness such as diarrhea, fever or lethargic behavior, you should consult with your veterinarian.

There are many reasons why a pet vomits. Here are a few common explanations.
Green Grass
While most dogs will chew on grass occasionally, some dogs make a habit of it. There is no medical reason why they eat grass. There are theories that some dogs do this because of a diet imbalance or indigestion. Many dogs vomit right after eating grass. The vomit is often green or greenish yellow as a major component of grass is chlorophyll.

If your dog is a grass chewer, keep him away from freshly fertilized or sprayed lawn areas. The chemicals can be toxic to your dog if he eats grass from these areas.
Eating Strange Items
Many dogs chew indiscriminately when they are left alone or bored. Some examples are socks, plastic bags, toys and shoes. However, eating and digesting are 2 different things. Items not meant to be in a dog’s stomach will come back as vomit that can be green, yellow, or white.

Items your dog swallows will have a flavoring, coloring, stain or paint on the surface. This can affect the color of your dog’s vomit.
Illness
When your pet is ill, his stomach gets upset. He will not eat and his stomach will be empty. Being ill stresses your pet. The stress of being ill often induces vomiting in your dog.
Allergies
Many commercial dog foods contain flavorings or colorings that affect your pet’s digestive system. Vomiting is a common effect of food allergies. By feeding your pet a high quality dog food with no fillers and additives, your dog will have less allergic reactions. A dog who is placed on a high protein dog food will have a stronger immune system. Your pet will be ill less often than a dog fed a commercial brand dog food.

Some pets have allergic reactions to vaccines or medications. In these cases, your pet will have itchy skin, rashes and vomiting. Common medications that often result in this type of reaction are antibiotics, worming medication, painkillers and steroids. The vomiting usually goes away as your pet gets accustomed to the medicine.
Change in Diet
Changes in your pet’s diet often induces an upset stomach and leads to vomiting. Table scraps, changing dog food, and new treats puts stress on your dog’s digestive system. When changing your pet’s diet, ensure that you slowly add the new food to his old brand of food. Gradually add more of the new food until your dog is eating only the new diet.

Your dog throwing up isn’t always a serious or severe condition by itself. However, when you see your dog exhibiting other signs of illness along with the vomiting, it is recommended that you consult your veterinarian. Other symptoms of illness along with the vomiting can be a sign that your pet has a serious condition needing professional medical attention.
