Allergy-Prone Dog Breeds

Shih Tzus are prone to dog food allergies

Poor breeding  provides a genetic predisposition to allergies in dogs. A dog’s body needs to learn to react to the allergen.  It is a learned phenomenon of the immune system that is genetically programmed and passed from generation to generation in several breeds.  Irresponsible breeders continually breed dogs who have this predisposition.  Since allergies in dogs do not normally show up until a dog is between one and three years of age, it is essential to view the dogs parents before purchasing.  Look for the obvious signs; brown drainage from eyes, hair loss and itching.

Any dog can be born with or develop various allergies, but there are some breeds that seem to be particularly prone to them. The following breeds are sensitive to issues with food and/or airborne allergies.
