Earning Your Dog"s Respect

I am often asked how I am able to do the things I do with dogs. Many people have tried to get their dogs to complete a certain task, whether it be getting their dogs to come to them, go into a crate or ring, or to simply calm down and be quiet. But these people often end up frustrated, and sometimes they take it out on the dog(s). Imagine how their frustration grows when they have invested a lot of their time and energy into getting the dog to complete this task and I come along and make it look easy. Don’t get me wrong. These people are usually very thankful that the dog did complete the task, finally, but they become frustrated with themselves for not being able to get the dog(s) to do it themselves. So they ask me, “How’d you do that?” One person even said, “Now, that just makes me mad!” But in different words.

Look, there is no magical secret. That is the first and foremost misconception. I am not a magic man wielding my power over dogs. I simply, yes simply, understand their language because I have studied it for 20 years. Anyone can do this, yes even you! Sure, some people have a “gift” for it like myself, but really that “gift” is just a love for it. Not a special ability. The “gift” just keeps me motivated, and if you have enough motivation, why… you can do anything!

So, to those who want to know how I do it, I’ll tell you. Earn the dog’s respect. That simple. Really. “Well, how do you earn the dog’s respect?” I’ll tell you. In a few simple steps below.

1.) Refrain from getting frustrated. Stay calm. This is the number one most important rule if you want to gain your dog’s or any dog’s respect. If you try to get the dog to do something, and he won’t budge, then there is a reason. Flying off the handle and yelling, screaming, hitting things, making loud noises, cussing, and jerking at his collar will NOT work. And if it does work, your dog has learned to fear you, and is not truly happy. Fear, is not respect. Dogs obey out of fear, for fear of harm. Dogs act out of respect, because they trust you and choose to listen and act. If you don’t stay calm, you will be seen as unbalanced by the dog. Dogs do not listen to unbalanced people, or dogs. Those dogs, and people will often be ignored, or attacked depending on the situation. But a calm person or dog is seen as balanced, and the dogs know that the calm ones mean business. Even the slightest bit of frustration can cause some dogs to lock up, avoid, or even attack.

2.) Set a goal and follow through. No matter how big, or small, you must have a goal in mind. Say the goal is to get your dog in the tub. No matter what happens, you MUST accomplish your goal every single time. One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they give in too soon. Some people say, “Well, he just doesn’t feel like it right now.” or “He’s just not ready yet.” The facts are that he may not feel like it, and he may not be ready, but he still needs to do it when you ask or he’ll learn he doesn’t have to listen to you. In the wild he could get killed for not honoring the pack leader. So when he doesn’t honor you, and nothing happens, guess who becomes the pack leader? Not you. Accomplish your goal every single time, and your dog will begin to respect you. All of the dogs at the daycare I work for know that when I tell them to go into the ring, they are going in the ring. There is no fight, or struggle to get them in. And I average about 20 dogs a day. If the dog is being stubborn, I will block and herd that dog where I need him to be. I rarely have to grab the collar and drag a dog to where I need him. This is because my goal is to get the pack into that ring, and I make sure I accomplish it.

3.) If the dog is hesitant, figure out why. Some dogs are less confident than others. If they are afraid of something, they will often avoid or flee from it. So in example, if you are trying to get your dog in the tub and she hesitates, take a moment to study her body language. What is she saying to you? Is she curved over with her tail tucked and ears laid flat? If so, this means she is feeling afraid. If she is licking her lips while curved, then she is saying that she is afraid and stressed about the situation. If she is nipping at you when you reach for her, it is out of fear, not aggression. You job is to accomplish your goal, so you need to figure out how to make your dog feel differently about the situation. This is where having some training experience is very handy. Because you may have to break down the process to get her to even go close to the offending object. If your dog is showing signs of stress and fear as mentioned above, either seek a trainer or behaviorist in your area to help, or look for one of my blog entries on dog training for help. Do not force a fearful or stressed dog to do something, because you can cause the dog to develop a phobia or squeeze out a bite.

If your dog is just resisting because she doesn’t want to get in the tub, she won’t curve herself. Instead, she will keep her posture straight. She may play keep away from you, she may bark, she may put the brakes on when you try to pull her, or all three. The key to knowing that she is simply being stubborn is her body posture. Figure out why she is being so stubborn. Does she hate water? Does she associate the tub as a negative thing for any reason? If so, change this by making it a game. Stubborn dogs are often easily lured by simply changing your tactics. It could just be that the goal you set is boring and there is no real reward in it for the dog. If you offer a treat, but the dog seems like she could care less, then the treat does not equal the motivation and energy needed to complete the task. Or put simply, it may not be worth it. Try upping the anti.

4.) Reward when the task is complete. Once you have followed through and the dog has completed the goal, reward the dog with something that the dog sees as rewarding. Often people will reward the dog with something they see as rewarding, and not with what the dog sees as rewarding. You can tell what the dog finds rewarding simply by watching them. Do they like to chase things? Do they like to take naps? Do they like to go for walks? Toys? Balls? What is the dog actively pursuing a lot of the time? Is what they are pursuing healthy for them? Ask these questions to find a reward for your dog. Some dogs are very simple and a nice scratch behind the ears, or above the tail is sufficient reward. Other dogs require more and would rather chase a ball, play with a toy, or take a nap on their owner’s lap. Most dogs are happy with something to chew on, like a bone or rawhide. Only let your dog have these with supervision. Rawhides can be dangerous. Treats are great, but too often people get stuck on treats and so do the dogs. Obesity becomes an issue, and the dogs’ diet becomes unhealthy. Some treats aren’t fully digested by dogs and this can cause coprophagia (eating poo). Use treats in moderation.

5.) Set up some rules and remain steadfast. Once you set up a rule, then you must enforce it every time. Dogs will test the rules often. If they find that they can break it with no consequence

, then they will continue to break it. Dogs learn by repetition, so you may have to enforce the rules more than once. You will also need to determine what the consequence for breaking the rules should be. It could be time alone, which a lot of dogs don’t like, or a squirt from the squirt bottle (doesn’t work that well on water loving breeds like Labs and Newfies) or you can block and muzzle. Block and muzzle is where you block the dog until they submit to you (lower their head or roll over on their back) and then put your hand around their muzzle. WARNING: Don’t try it with dogs that show ANY signs of aggression! You may get bitten! Or you can leg bump, which is where you walk into the dog and gently bumb them with your shin. DO NOT KICK! Don’t leg bump small dogs, because you could accidently injure them. The same is true with very tall dogs, like skinny Great Danes. You could injure their hips and/or legs. You must stand up straight when leg bumping. What you are doing is mimicing an alpha dog’s butt bump. This is where an alpha dog will turn himself and litterally bumb another dog with his butt. It’s a way for the alpha to say “I’m boss, knock it off.” While doing the butt bump, the alpha dog will stand erect and proud, so you must do the same for it to work. Sometimes it helps to say “Hey!” or something short when leg bumping.

6.) Stay consistent! This is really important. Lack of consistency is a leading reason why people fail with their dogs. By staying consistent, you are showing your dog that you are the boss. Consistency is a very important ingredient when trying to earn your dog’s respect. Dogs thrive on it, and with out it they often panic. You can not let your dog do something one time, and then not the other. The reverse is true as well. Once a dog learns a rewarding behavior, that behavior tends to stick. So if every time your dog barks at the mailman and the mailman goes away, that is a reward to your dog. Because your dog successfully defended his and your territory from an intruder. The mailman is usually consistent and comes and goes at the same time everyday.  Your dog picks up on this, and will be ready when the mailman comes. This example can be applied to anything, but the point is that dogs need, count on, thrive on, learn from, and down right live on consistency.

If you put all of these things together, you will earn your dog’s respect. It really is a lot simpler than it sounds. Keep in mind that dogs learn by trial and error. They do something, and if no one disagrees with it, and it’s rewarding, they will do it again. If someone stronger disagrees with it, then they will usually move on. Dogs do not think like people, so don’t feel bad about enforcing the rules. Your dog will respect you for making the rules and then enforcing them. They are a lot like kids in that way. Push them too hard, and they rebel; don’t push hard enough and they will become uncontrollable.

dog collars for big dogs

Green Dog Collars-Amstaff wearing Rogue Royalty Green Leather Spiked Collar

Choosing a Dog Collar

Dog collars are an important accessory for almost every dog out there.  A dog collar serves several different purposes.

First, it allows you to have a way to identify your dog separate from a microchip should he get loose and still be wearing his collar.  A collar also generally has a place to place rabies tags and other important information as well – such as whether or not your dog has any severe allergies or health issues similar to a med-alert bracelet.

Choosing the right dog collar for your best friend isn’t simply a matter of style.  While the style may be one of your selection criteria, it probably shouldn’t be the first or most important.  Above all, an appropriately fitted dog collar should be comfortable for your pooch to wear around.  It should not chafe or scrape or otherwise cut into the skin in any way.  If it does, the collar either doesn’t fit appropriately or isn’t made of the right materials.

If you are buying dog collars for a puppy, you should consider ones that are easily expanded.

Puppies are growing at an accelerated pace and what may fit them this week, may be entirely too tight next month when the puppy has almost doubled in size.  Make sure with puppies to check the fit of their collars frequently.  If you do not, the puppy can actually grow around the collar, requiring it to be surgically removed as the skin and hair grows over it.  If you are rescuing an animal, a collar that has grown into the skin is a sign of neglect.

When considering options for toy dogs, it is generally better to go with a harness rather than a dog collar.  Collars on very small dogs can pose a health hazard and are responsible for too many crushed tracheas every year.

A harness, on the other hand will provide a much safer option for walking your small dog.  If you must use a collar on a small dog, make sure that it is not too tight and that it will break away easily if the dog puts too much pressure on it.

These are just some things to consider when purchasing new dog collars.  While you should also have a microchip added in case your dog should break free, if they are still wearing a collar make sure you have some form of identification tag added to the collar.  Fit the collar correctly and make sure there is enough give in a small dog collar that it will break away should your dog apply too much pressure to it.  Replacing puppy collars frequently as they grow will help keep your puppy healthy and happy.

Dog collars run the gambit from designer to leather to everything in between. You shouldn’t have too many problems finding an appropriate collar that fits your style as well as your dog’s comfort and well being.

Hot dogs, burgers, homemade food at Dog Daze Hot Dogs, Canton Ohio

Dog Daze Sign-LogoWe thought it was a rule that we had to write a story. So here it goes. It started out with a chili dog at a gas station in West “By God” Virginia. Perhaps the best chili dog ever. So, we decided to open a chili dog shop.  We traveled the globe, or at least a few states, eating hot dogs along the way. Our chili dog idea evolved into a Gourmet Hot Dog shop idea. We decided we wanted a funky little hot dog shack, with great dogs, and an atmosphere that people want to come and hang out.

We met some of the friendliest people along the way. In Huntington, WV we met Sonny from Hillbilly Hotdogs (as seen on Diners, Drive Ins & Dives). In Columbus, there is Dirty Franks where we realized what the atmosphere we envisioned looks like. In Cincinnati we met Ava & David of Hot Doggin’ It. A true Chicago hotdog shop. In Medina there is Dan’s Dogs. A throw back hotdog dinner. In Parma there is The Hot Dog Diner.  In Wilkes Barr Pennsylvania we learned that Pierogies are a must have menu item. And in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at Pete’s Hot Dog Shop we saw firsthand what 70 years of hot dog success look like.

We hope that you like what we put together. “Just a funky little hot dog shack with good food and fun people”.

Medium Sized Dogs

Medium Sized Dogs Biography
It is said that there was movement of people between Europe and Japan when the two areas were not separated by The Sea of Japan. It is believed that dogs were then introduced to Japan.

Dog paw prints found in Jomon period (8000 to 300 B.C) pit houses suggest that dogs were raised as pets inside homes as early 3,000 years ago. The paw prints measured 4.3cm to 5.7cm long and suggest that the dogs were of medium size. Dog bones were commonly found in graves of this era.

The Japanese Akita Inu originated in the Tohoku area of Japan. This is the most northerly region of mainland Japan, adjoining the Chubu and Kanto regions. It sits below the Hokkaido (island) region and comprises of six prefectures; they are: Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Yamagata and of course Akita.

In the Medium Sized Dog Breed Center you will find a comprehensive list of only medium sized dog breeds with specific information on many breeds of dogs. If you’re looking for a dog that is not too small, nor too big, this is the center for you. You can learn about all the important dog breed characteristics including physical description, personality and trainability, potential health issues, historical information, and much more.

Medium sized dog breeds are all about the same size, but they still are unique from each other when it comes to appearance, activity needs, and temperament such as the Afghan Hound, and the Border Collie.

Not too big, not too small, medium dogs are just right for an owner who wants a dog with a little more substance without tipping the scales. Ranging from 20-60 lbs, these sturdy and reliable breeds like the Australian Shepherd, the French Bulldog and the American Pit Bull Terrier, are not going to fit in your purse, but you still might be able to pick them up. Many of the medium sized breeds are appealing to families who have smaller children, but don’t have the space for a larger dog.

A Charming Patriotic 4th of July Dog Gift Basket

Coprophagia - Why Do Some Dogs Eat Their Poop?

Copraphagia is defined as eating feces.  When a dog eats their own poop, there are many theories as to why.  Some examples are: attention-seeking, maternal instinct, dominance, reinforcement, feeding behavior, illness and diet.

Illnesses may include: Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, Pancreatitis, Intestinal Infections and Malabsorptive Syndromes. These illnesses usually include many other symptoms such as diarrhea, too. It is suggested you see a Veterinarian to rule out any serious illness before considering other causes.

There are three different kinds of Copraphagia

Autocoprophagia – Animal eating its own feces.
Intraspecific Coprophagia – Animal eating feces from another animal within its own species.
Interspecific Coprophagia – Animal eating feces from another species (dog eating cat feces etc.)

If you have ruled out serious illness, the next step is a process of elimination (no pun intended).  Is your dog left alone a lot and seeking attention?  Does he eat a high fatty diet?  Is he scolded for pooping in the house?  Is he fed only once a day?

If it seems the problem is not a learned behavior, you may be dealing with a diet issue.  Some of the reasons cited for Copraphagia in dogs can be lack of nutrients.  Cheap dog food may lack the nutrients your dog needs and he may be attempting to feel full by eating his feces.  Feeding your dog once a day is also being investigated.  The theory is that dogs need to be fed more small meals per day rather than one larger one. They use coprophagia to supplement their feeding schedule.

If you believe your dog has a food allergy and is eating his poop, he may need a diet change to correct the problem.  A dog food that is filling and nutritional without allergens should help if the coprophagia is not strictly behavior based.

Besides a diet change and behavior training there are other options.  Adding Meat Tenderizer (enzymes) to the dogs diet is supposed to help break down the nutrients for better absorption.  Thus, helping the dog feel full with no need to eat his feces.  Also,  a supplement called Forbid (prescription) or Deter makes the feces taste bad to the dog.

Diarrhea In Dogs: Causes & Treatment

Beagle puppy eating

Diarrhea is common in dogs.

Whether your dog is a young puppy, that has not has completed all their vaccinations, or your dog is old, talk to your vet if your dog has diarrhea.

Both very young and old dogs are susceptible to dehydration. Parvovirus can cause life threatening diarrhea in puppies that not have completed their vaccinations.

Diarrhea can either be acute (comes on suddenly and is over in a short period of time) or chronic (comes on gradually (usually) and persists or is recurrent).

Find out;

Causes of Dog Diarrhea

Diarrhea can have many causes, such as;

Some of these categories can overlap. The most common are “dietary indiscretion” and parasites.

Dietary Indiscretion

Eating inappropriate stuff comes with the territory with dogs. Dogs are natural scavengers and will eat all kinds of things. Examples of “bad” choices include trash, dead animals, rotting food, plants, wood, plastic, rubber and pretty much anything you can think of.

Anything that is irritating to the digestive tract of a dog can cause vomiting and/or diarrhea.

If the diarrhea persists, it could be poisoning or there could be a chronic infection developing. Take your dog to a vet.

Parasites

Dogs can pick up parasites from various sources depending on the particular intestinal parasite. If a dog has chronic diarrhea, parasites may be the cause. When you visit the vet take a stool sample. Once the type of parasite has been identified then the parasites can be killed and eliminated with the appropriate medication.

Some preventative medications such those for heartworm are also effective against some of the intestinal parasites; see Table of common heartworm preventative medications.

Intolerance to One or More Foods

This is not the same as food allergy. When a dog has a food allergy, the body reacts by triggering a hypersensitivity response that involves a particular type of antibody known as IgE. The most common symptom of a food allergy is itchy skin (see Allergies) not diarrhea.

With food intolerance, the result is usually a rapid transit of the food through the intestine and hence diarrhea. There are a wide range of foods that can cause food intolerance. You can try changing the food or eliminate different foods from the diet. There are a range of specially formulated dog foods available, both commercially and at the vet, that can be tried in the case of suspected food intolerance.

If your dog eats foods that contain milk or milk-byproducts, this is one of the first things to try eliminating. Like humans dogs can be lactose intolerant.

Sudden change in diet

Some dogs are very sensitive to changes in diet. A change from one type of dog food to another can upset their digestive tract.

To stop this happening it is recommended not to make a sudden switch but to have a transition period where slowly the amount of the old food is reduced and the new food increased at feedings.

Sudden stress

Stress can give some dogs diarrhea. A trip to the vet or other stress, such as a new owner, can cause a dog to have diarrhea. Once the dog is no longer in the stressful situation or relaxes, the diarrhea will stop.

Overeating

Though overeating is more likely to cause vomiting, it can occasionally cause diarrhea.

Poisoning

A number of substances, that are poisonous to dogs, can cause diarrhea as part of their symptoms. If you know, or suspect, that your dog has consumed a poison, seek veterinary care immediately. You can check out the Animal Poison Control Center if you are not sure if the substance consumed is a poison – however if your dog is really sick assume they have consumed a poison and get vet help immediately.

Bowel diseases

There are a number of bowel diseases that will cause chronic diarrhea. These include inflammatory diseases and malabsorption syndrome. If bowel disease is diagnosed, your vet may prescribe medications and will often recommend dietary changes.

Chronic infection

Most infections that involve the digestive tract will cause acute (short-lived) diarrhea, but some can also cause chronic diarrhea. Antibiotics may be prescribed by your vet if a persistent infection is suspected.

Side effect of some medications

Some medications may cause diarrhea in some dogs. Read the information provided with medications, so that you are aware of any potential side effects.

Treatment of Diarrhea

As stated above, if your dog is young, old or has any underlying health problems seek veterinary advice.

Very young and very old dogs do not cope well with dehydration. The loss of fluid that accompanies diarrhea can cause problems, or even kill very young and old dogs.

If your puppy has not had all its vaccinations, take your dog to your vet immediately. Parvovirus is a life threatening infection.

Symptoms that require veterinary attention

If the diarrhea in any age of dog

  • contains blood

  • has a black and a tarry consistency

  • episodes of vomiting

  • fever

  • weak or listless

  • gums are pale or have a yellowish look

  • rapid pulse

Also, if the diarrhea persists and is not tailing off by 24 hours or gone by 48 hours, get veterinary guidance.

Treating Acute Diarrhea

In a dog that is otherwise healthy and not a young puppy or very old dog, acute diarrhea can often be treated at home.

Since diarrhea is due to irritation of the digestive tract it is important to rest the tract by not giving any food to the dog for about 24 hours. To reduce the risk of dehydration the dog should be encouraged to drink water. Drinking water does not cause irritation.

Some vets will suggest that if the diarrhea has lasted more than a day, that you can try a half and half mixture of water and Pedialyte, in place of water, if the dog will drink it.

Another treatment for diarrhea is to give your dog Pepto-Bismol.

Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate are usually recommended at 0.5 -1ml per lb (1 fl oz per 15 to 30 lbs) every 6 to 8 hours. Regular strength Pepto-Bismol – ¼ tablet per 20 lbs every 6 to 8 hours. Liquid is preferred over tablets, if possible. The best way to give the liquid is using a syringe (without a needle!) and squirting the Pepto Bismol into the cheek pouch (inside the cheek, outside the teeth towards the back). It can be a bit messy, so do it somewhere that is easy to clean, such as in the kitchen.

Pepto-Bismol will darken the stool, and may cause constipation in some dogs.

Using probiotics

To help restore the balance of bacteria in the gut during and after diarrhea, probiotics may be helpful. For more information on probiotics see Probiotics; What Are They? Are they Effective For Dogs?.

Signs that Your Dog"s Diet Needs to be Changed

How would you know your dog’s diet needs to be changed? Who can you speak with to understand more about what might need to be changed concerning your dog’s diet? It might seem like your dog is just fine eating whatever can or bag of dog food ends up in your shopping cart, but how can you know for certain that the dog’s diet is on the right track?

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself when your trying to determine if and when your dog’s diet might need to be changed. How does your dog act? Is your dog frequently rummaging through the house for scraps and crumbs? Can your dog comfortably rest after a meal?

A dog with a full belly will be content and after eating a good meal, will have the ability to comfortably take a nap.

Is your dog’s excrement thin, runny, or firm? Your dog’s diet dramatically affects their excrement. By paying attention during potty breaks, you’ll be able to determine if your dog has an appropriate diet.

Is your dog frequently feeling ill or under the weather? If so, you might want to think about what is in your dog’s dish. A dog’s diet feeds their immune system and maintains your dog’s health. Your dog will not function at their best if their diet lacks the proper nutrition and vitamins.

As your dog matures, a change in your dog’s diet might be necessary. An adult dog has different dietary requirements than that of a puppy. Older dogs might need senior diets to assist in combating weight or medical problems.

Afer observing your dog, do they seem high strung or lazy? Your dog’s diet can influence your dog’s energy level. If you take your dog on walks that consist of a few miles, you might need to adapt your dog’s diet to accommodate the higher level of activity.

If you keep your dog outside or inside can affect your dog’s diet. For example, dogs that stay outside during the winter might need additional food and extra calories in order to stay warm in the cold.

Always speak with a professional whenever you have questions about what kind of diet your dog needs. Always inform your vet of any health or medical concerns. They will be happy to speak with you about the specific pros and cons of various dog diets. Work with your vet to decide if your dog’s diet requires a change.

There are a lot of different factors that can influence the possibility that your dog’s diet requires a change. Age, health concerns, and even weather conditions can cause the need to alter your dog’s diet. Speak with your vet about what the best diet for your dog is. Good education and observation will help you determine whether or not your dog’s diet is on the right track.

Healthier Dogs Live Longer

It’s time to get back to work on this blog and expand it from just talking about dog food to everything to do with making your dog happier and healthier. The big boy above is named Timber and he would like you and all your dogs to come talk to us and post pics on our Facebook fan page, so click on this link and join us Healthier Dogs Live Longer

Those of you that have followed my rants on commercial dog food for the last two years know that I’m into homemade dog food… My wife and I will be launching a site where we will be uploading video and recipes for those interested in feeding homemade.

As I said before, I do understand those that just need to feed a commercial brand, but PLEASE do me a favor. If you go to our FB fan page listed above and just hit “Like” I will send you a copy of the best nine dog foods in North America.

I also list three major brands that you must avoid all all cost and the sad part is your Vet is probably selling these brands.

One last thought… a healthy dog is also a happy dog and a happy dog is always a well trained dog. If you want to get free quality information and videos on dog care and dog training click one of these links now.

Timber says “see you on the other side”

I started to get serious about health issues for dogs once mine started having them at the age of six. Instead of wasting time watching TV, lately, I have been studying ways to ensure my dogs have the longest lives possible.

For the ones that are familiar with my work and opinions, you will already know that I feel that commercial dog food is one of the main cause of health problems. For this reason I have become practically evangelical about the benefits of homemade dog food; I truly believe that it is the best dog food out there.

In actuality, the majority of people will need to provide supplemental commercial food in addition to the homemade diet. This is the reason I take a lot of time with the best dog food topic.

One area of controversy that I encountered was the usage of meat by products in dog food. You’ll recognize this because a meat, such as lamb or chicken, will be shown with the word by-product attached.

What does it contain and is it any good for your pet? If you really get into this matter, you will discover there are two different groups, one the feels that by-products are just fine, and the other that feels that they are unhealthy to feed your dog.

The truth is, it depends let’s take a look at the definition of Poultry by-products.

“Poultry derivatives contain mashed up, renderings, clean portions of murdered poultry cadavers, such as necks, beak, feet, unhatched eggs and intestines, leaving out feathers, “except in various amounts that might happen by accident in normal processing”The trouble is you are not aware of the ingredients all the time. There isn’t any standard that states there are a certain amount of feet or a measurement of intestines or any form of nutrition at all. In reality, none of this is actually suitable for a person to eat.

There are some who will make the argument that because some of the by-product ingredients are what the dog would actually eat in the wild, they are fine for them to eat in a dog food. Even if this is the case it is tantamount to saying that because homeless people eat out of garbage cans, dumpster food is great for everyone else, too.

Since I plan on feeding my dogs the best food possible, by-products will remain in the trash and won’t be found in any of the food I provide.

Do you consider big name dog food brands to be made with the best dog food ingredients? Brand names are often well advertised but that does not mean they are what is right for your dog.

Sadly the best dog food for your dog is probably not even being sold in your Vets office. Just because a dog food is sold by your veterinarian does not mean it is the healthiest food available.

After my Beagle started having Seizures, I have spent many hours researching how to pick the best dog food. I have learned more about how to decipher a dog food label and understand what all the ingredients are, than most people know about their own human food.

The more research I did, the deeper I entered the ugly world of commercial dog foods.

It became apparent that in order for me to be sure I was feeding the best dog food, I would need to understand a whole lot more about how the pet food industry worked.

I have documented my findings in many articles about the pet food industry, which is virtually self-regulated, and about how the industry uses deceptive labeling language to deceive pet owners about true contents of pet food.

The only thing that even comes close to helping us figure out the best dog food, is the requirement that the Industry must list the most prominent ingredient by weight first on the label. So if the first ingredient is a corn product, it doesn’t matter if the name on the bag says Chicken dinner delight, the main ingredient by weight is the corn product.

Do yourself a favor and ignore the name on the bag and take a look at the ingredient list to determine what the food really is. After you make it through the first couple of ingredients that you think you understand what they are, that is where the fun begins.

As you start to look at ingredient lists, your going to see healthy sounding ingredients like dried egg products. Don’t be fooled this particular ingredient is anything but healthy. You would find what’s in dried egg product very sickening to eat so why foist it on your dog. Another good one, is Chicken by-products, if you think this has anything to do with chicken you would serve your family, think again.

Though some of the listed ingredients are self explanatory, there are preservatives and vitamins added that may be unnecessary and hard to identify.

This why I was happy to find during my research a very strict guide of what to look for on a dog food label, and this is what I use to find the best dog food, for my dogs.

With this guide I have been able to go through a list of 150 brands of dog food, and come up with the best dog food top ten list. It is very obvious once you compare the ingredient list of the 10 best dog food to the brands your Vet probably sells, that you probably shouldn’t be depending on your Vet for a healthy dog food selection.

Check out the 10 best dog food list here

In the past I’ve wrote many articles and blog posts on healthy dog food, but today I would like to talk more about everything else it takes to raise a dog.

Everyday we have questions pertaining to our dogs, from simple things like getting them to sit, to how best to prepare them to take a trip. You might also like to know if there is a more natural way to protect your pet from fleas and ticks without using chemicals.

One of the side benefits about my hundreds of hours of research on dog food has been that I have been able to find reliable resources for answers to all of the questions above. This has allowed me to be a better parent for my two dogs.

The biggest problem is weeding out the facts from the myths, or should I say the experts from the scams artist. To say the least this has been a change, after all we want to know that we will be helping our dog before we make changes to their care.

I got to thinking on how great it would be if I could call and expert in the field for all the questions I had. I called my vet so often that he stopped returning my calls, which was probably the best thing anyway.

Most vets are not experts in things like training your dog, so they can’t give you good advice on this and many other question you’ll have.

The truth is good dog parenting starts even before you bring the dog home. You need good information on how to select the best breed for your family.
If you have been a parent for some time you might would like to know the best way to care for an elderly dog, but where do you find expert advice on this topic?

Most pet owners never find the answers to all their pet questions and they end up flying by the seat of their pants. This can be bad for them and their dogs.

Animal shelters across the country say that pet owners either pick the wrong breed, or they have a problem with the dog that they don’t know how to correct when the leave their dog with them..

All my hard work has paid off, and I have now found a recourse of experts being interviewed on a host of dog parenting topics that continue to be expanded month after month.

Michael Considine has a love for teaching dog parents how to better raise their dogs. If you want to be a better dog parent check out dog book of the month

More pet owners are starting to think about their dog’s health being tied to their food, and this has them asking what are the best dog food brands?Really all you need to do to get the best dog food brand is to read and understand the list of ingredients on the label.

I wish it was that easy, but the deceptive wording used by the dog food industry makes it a bit more difficult.

There are many people telling us healthy food to eat, but it’s a lot more difficult to find good information on a healthy diet for our pets.

The trouble here is that pet food producers are allowed to incorporate ingredients that are not for human consumption in their foods. The companies not only use by-product in their food, but are legally allowed to mask how unhealthy it is by using healthy sounding names in the ingredients list.

One would imagine that seeing dried eggs as ingredients for dog foods would mean the foods are good. The truth is it often includes animal parts that are deemed unacceptable for human consumption.

I found a list of 68 ingredients while doing research for the best dog food brands, that if any ore founf on your dog food label; stop feeding that brand to your dog. Nearly halve of these 68 ingredients are unhealthy and will leave to a shortening of your dogs life if consumed on a regular basis.

We also read and reviewed a dog food report written based on the results of testing agent at a firm searching for the best US dog foods. Sorry I can not re-print that article here because of the copyright.

What I can tell you is after looking at every brand of dog food in North America they only found 9 that made the list of the best dog food brands, based on being healthy selections.

A number of the best name brands in dog foods are on the list of 27 brands considered but failing to make the final list. Some of the big brand names such as Science Diet and Iams were not of sufficient quality to pass the tests to get on the list.

On account of the stated reasons, six brands were eliminated from this second report.
The report gives details about the pros and cons of every brand.

Because of my finding of what goes into commercially made dog food, I now feed my dogs a homemade dog food diet. Even knowing what I know there are times that it is just easier to open a bag and pour some food, but I refuse to compromise the health of my dogs. That is why I continued to do research until I found a reliable source for the best dog food brands to supplement my homemade food.

Because of my dogs heath problems I started to do research on dog food. One of the most important things I found was a report on dog food ingredients, which explains in detail over sixty ingredients to avoid.

Because the report is copyright protected I can’t just post it here, but because this report could save your dogs life it is important I pass on as much information as possible. I’ll also tell you where to get a copy.

Below you see a small sample of some of the dog food ingredients listed in the report.

Glyceryl Monostrearate
Animail Digest
BHA
Grape Pomace
Fish Oil

The report ranks each ingredient with a ranking of either Deadly, Moderation Only, or Harmless but Useless 28 ingredients listed in the report have a ranking of deadly, and some could be found in the dog food you’re feeding your dog right now

You are probably asking yourself why the dog food companies would use ingredients that could harm my dog. The cold hard truth is profits.

In 2007 the odds finally caught up with the dog food industry, but normally they don’t kill so many dogs do get themselves noticed. No there won’t be a mass killing today, but millions of dogs will continue to die too young.

The problem is we have been programmed to think that twelve years old is an expectable age for a dog to die. When the truth is with the correct dog food diet they could live to be 20.

The report explains in detail what the ingredients listed in your dog food really mean. Sadly they are not what you think they are.

Don’t waste another minute of your dogs life, click below to make certain your feeding food that won’t end up on a dog food recall list.

I’m not going to mix words; I believe most commercial dog foods are killing our dogs and the only way to save them is with a homemade dog food diet. Most pet foods are deficient of important nutrients and have ingredients that should be on a toxic waste manifest.

The labeling laws for the pet food industry are a joke, and they are able to hide ingredients like listed below.

Indigestible waste products
Colors & dyes
Pesticides
Chemicals
Harmful preservatives
Antibiotics
Dead, diseased, disabled or dying animals prior to their visit to the slaughter house.
Animal by-products including some recently euthanized pet cats or dogs.

Slaughter houses and rendering companies toxic leftovers, not fit for human consumption are sold to pet food companies. This toxic waste is rendered at temperatures well over 300 degree, and any nutritional values that might have been in this crap is lost in the process.

Because of the junk being sold as dog food, I started to research on how to best make homemade dog food.

Research shows that a homemade dog food diet could be dangerous if the owners does not follow a plan to ensure the diet is well balanced . This should consist of 40 percent meat, 30 percent vegetables and 30 percent starch.

I’m not going to lie to you, without some help, making certain that your homemade dog food diet is complete and nutritionally balanced is very difficult. That is why I spent many hours doing the research before I changed to a homemade dog food diet.I was scared that if I didn’t find a proven well balanced diet that it could cause long term health problems for my pets.

The experts say that any homemade dog food should have both a good source of protein and carbohydrates.

Below is a list of some sources of protein and carbohydrates for homemade dog food diets.:

roasted skinless chicken breast
pan browned ground beef
broiled pork loin
broiled lamb chop
baked Atlantic salmon
hard boiled whole egg
cottage cheese
tofu
long-grained white rice
long-grained brown rice
baked white potatoes
baked sweet potatoes
enriched, cooked spaghetti
cooked oats
cooked barley

What’s amazing to me is these foods are the same healthy foods we should be buying for our family now. Did you notice the list does not include animal by products and filler ingredients?

Finding a list of healthy ingredients was the first step, but it still took hours of research to learn how to prepare a well balanced homemade dog food diet,. We needed to make certain that our recipes provide the nutrition our dogs need for a lifetime of good health.

This might be a little extra work, but to have a chance to see that wagging tail and feel that unconditional love for up to 20 years, makes it all worth it.

Take advantage of all my research and make certain you never need to worry about a dog food recall again by clicking this link.

Most pet owners are back feeding their dogs and cat’s food made by the same companies that had major recalls. After 2007 dog food recall the industry seen the light and now has nothing but the pet’s best interest at heart right?
Don’t believe a word I wrote in that last sentence. The regulations are just as loose as they were in 2007, and no one has added manpower to correct this mess.

We as pet owners are basically waiting for the next shoe to drop. There has already been hundreds of dog food recall alerts in the last two years, but none as big as the ones in 2007. Just because they are small and mostly unnoticed recalls, does not mean there aren’t pets dying around the world because of this neglect.

Bad things already started happening before any dog food recall alert goes out. Pet owners are already dealing with sickness and death. Without better inspections we will always be behind the curve when in comes to a dog food recall. You are already dealing with the results of the poison if your dog has been affected by the recall.

There are no words for the feeling you get when you go from playing fetch with your yellow lab, to six weeks later burying her in the back yard. You feel helpless when you are told by the vet that her systems are shutting down one by one and there is nothing that can be done to help her.

You pray that she’ll get better, but when her breathing becomes so labored that you hear her in the next room and you know it’s time to take her to the vet. You were praying this day would never come and you know this is the last ride the two of you will have together while she is still alive.

You think, no I’m not strong enough to make this decision, but then she looks at you as if to say I need your help and it is time to let me go. Your head is pressed against hers and with tears pouring from your eyes you fill the last breath leaving her body.

You take her home crying the whole way and you dig a grave in the back yard and say your last goodbye to the best friend you ever had. The only friend that truly gave you back unconditional love no matter what you did.

Now you start to think about the dog food recall and wonder what it would have been like if you had not been feeding that food. Then you remember the two other dogs in the family eat a brand of food that’s not on the list, but is it safe or will it show up on a dog food recall list next?

The research I’ve done since I lost my best friend has me convinced that it’s just a matter of time before all commercially made dog food ends up having a recall. We must figure out a better way to feed our pets.

There is no way I’m going to lose another pet to the greedy profit grubbing pet food industry. I’ve done the research and I now know what I need to do to feed my dogs.

My research shows there is an easy way to protect our pets, to say goodbye to dog food recall lists click here.

Dogs: The different species in your living room

earl-tooth

Originally posted on MuttAboutTown.com.

When owning a dog, it almost goes without saying that he or she becomes part of the family unit. Dogs sleep in our beds, join us at the dining table (whether they’re supposed to or not), and accompany us on all variety of errands and outings. Sometimes this assimilation into our lives becomes so seamless that we forget we are sharing our home with an entirely different species from our own.

So much of dog training gets misconstrued as a battle of control. Phrases like the dog “should do this” and “should know this” permeate the language, as does hypothesizing about what a dog is thinking without any scientific basis. The fact is, dogs don’t know what we’re thinking and they certainly don’t inherently know all the rules and regulations that come with living in our homes. What we perceive as the meaning of dog behavior, and what dogs are really communicating to us, are two very different things.

Richard Yahner, a professor of wildlife conservation at Penn State, explains this concept in this book Wildlife and Conservation  writing, “As humans, we consistently judge the behavior of animals (e.g., that pet is cute) or fellow humans (e.g., that new neighbor is friendly, etc.) based on their appearance and how they act from our perspective. In other words, we seldom look at the ecology of a pet or human or, for that matter, of an animal in the wild” (1).

He goes on to list four questions that are integral to those studying wildlife behavior, writing, “…1) what are the mechanisms that cause a certain behavior? (e.g., hormonal, genetic, learning, etc.), 2) how does a given behavior develop? (e.g. ontogeny, cultural transmission, etc.) 3) what is the survival value of a given behavior? and 4) how does a given behavior evolve?” (4).

Although Yahner was discussing wildlife, his statements are incredibly relevant to dog training. If we ask these four questions when it comes to communicating with our own dogs, we will be well on the path to actually understanding them – not just understanding what we think their behavior means from our human perspective.

In this post, I will explore the first of the four questions: What mechanisms cause a certain behavior?

Each behavior your dog performs, whether it be an obedience command, snarling at another dog, or dissecting a stuffed toy, has an immediate causation, or trigger, and an adaptive significance. Animals make changes to their behavior on a real-time basis through learning. They also live, as James O’Heare writes in Aggressive Behavior in Dogs, “within the context and constraints of their biology” (67). In other words, evolutionary history and learning influence dog behavior. And, due to dogs’ extensive history of selective breeding, they differ as to what behaviors they retain from their evolutionary history and when they perform these behaviors.

Take, for example, a dog who rolls over for a treat. He does so because he learned this behavior, likely through operant conditioning techniques. He didn’t come into this world as a puppy knowing that rolling over leads to treats and praise from other humans. He learned through repetition that this behavior is hugely rewarding.

Contrast this with a dog who vigorously shakes and dissects a stuffed toy given to her by her owner, mimicking dissection behavior. Stuffed toy dissection, otherwise known as a fixed action pattern, requires no learning on the part of the dog. FAPs vary across each individual dog. For example, some dogs will retain the dissection FAP. Some won’t. Some will only perform the behavior on a particular stuffed toy, leaving the others intact.

At this point, you may be asking why evolutionary history and FAPs are relevant. The fact is, FAPs are at the root many “problem” behaviors in our dogs. Resource guarding, stalking, urination marking, watchdog barking, chasing and biting moving objects, fear of novel objects or people, and mounting are all examples. Does this mean these behaviors are unchangeable? Not at all, but we need to understand where the behaviors come from in order to effectively change them. FAPs provide a context through which these behaviors occur. (Note that this context is not one of dominance or subversion, but one of nature and evolution. What a relief to know that dogs aren’t plotting and scheming our demise from their beds, as some trainers would have us believe!)

As humans, we are responsible for bringing dogs into our homes with the knowledge that they are a different species from ourselves. It is our responsibility to teach our dogs how to live in our world harmoniously, through means our dogs understand. Even though it can be frustrating when our dogs behave contrary to how we think they should behave, we need to step back and view the situation through a compassionate lens. After all, dogs aren’t furry humans. They’re dogs. And I, for one, wouldn’t want it any other way.
